Winter is a season that is associated with many different traditions: putting up lights, exchanging gifts, New Years resolutions and more. My personal tradition, though, is a little less common. Every winter, I order a big box of grapefruit from Texas and have it shipped to my house.

It’s something my mom always did when I was growing up, and now that I live on my own, I continue the tradition. In today’s post we’ll try to answer the following question: Does grapefruit burn fat? It takes a couple of weeks to arrive, but the day that I come home and see my grapefruit package waiting at my door, I’m always super excited.

Grapefruit season spans from winter to early spring, and that means that this time of year, these citrus fruits are even more delicious than usual. In addition to being tasty, though, grapefruits also boast innumerable health benefits. One fruit has 4 grams of fiber, a ton of both vitamin C and vitamin A, and all for only one hundred calories.

Grapefruits are a dieters dream and a healthy addition to any well-balanced diet.

What About Grapefruit Diets?

Does grapefruit juice burn fat? Using grapefruit as a weight-loss tool is by no means a new idea. So called “grapefruit diets” have been popular since the 1970s and still are. These diets mandate that the participants replace a lot of what they eat with grapefruits and grapefruit juice.

By doing this, dieters are told, they will drop a lot of pounds in a short period of time. However, the popularity of these trends has left a lot of people confused about the way that consuming grapefruit helps people shed weight. Does grapefruit burn fat or is there another explanation?

The truth of the matter is that most of the fad “grapefruit diets” actually just cut out a lot of calories by replacing big meals with small fruits. You lose weight when you consume fewer calories than you burn, so it makes sense that people who do this get lighter.

But it’s more of a crash diet, and that means that long term, eating a diet of mostly grapefruit is no way to live a healthy life. Eating too few calories can be just as unhealthy as eating too many. Despite this, there is a way that grapefruits can be part of a diet.

Does grapefruit truly burn fat? No. In a really simple way, the fiber and high water content of grapefruits help people feel full and satisfied for a longer period of time than a lot of other foods. This is true of many fruits.

And here are some health benefits of grapefruits!

Grapefruit Juice

Like I said earlier, every winter I order a giant box of grapefruit. And although it is amazing and delicious, after weeks of eating a grapefruit every morning with breakfast, I grow a little tired of the same old thing. Fortunately, I have a juicer.

Juicers are a great way to consume fruits and vegetables, because they remove the fiber and make it easier for your body to absorb the vitamins and minerals.

With grapefruit, though, if I remove the fiber by juicing, does I remove the component that helps with maintaining a healthy weight?

Or does grapefruit juice burn fat cells? As it turns out, grapefruits actually have a high level of naringenin, an antioxidant that helps stabilize the metabolism.

This means that if you eat a grapefruit early in the day, you are much less likely to have a blood sugar crash later. While this is obviously beneficial for people with diabetes, it’s good for others as well. When your blood sugar is stable, you are less likely to crave unhealthy, unnecessary snacks throughout the day.

You can reap the benefits of this antioxidant from the whole grapefruit, but also from grapefruit juice. And if you don’t like the taste of the tart juice, you can mix it with others to mellow out the flavor. I personally think carrot juice and grapefruit juice pair nicely.

An added benefit of this is that mixing different juices together means you’ll get a wide variety of vitamins. So does grapefruit burn fat? No, but it provides an alternative to fatty snacks. It’s not a magical process like some people believe: eating a grapefruit won’t mean that pounds of fat just melt off your body.

But the healthy aspects of this fruit can help prevent you from overeating by keeping you satisfied and your blood sugar regulated. It can also help by boosting your energy levels to fuel you through workouts. By cutting out extra calories and getting regular exercise, you will definitely start losing unhealthy fat.

  1. I have read that grapefruit should never be consumed by people who take statins. (Thousands) I have seen this warning in the press several times.
